Vincenta is an electronic celestial navigation aid developed by Vincenta Ltd for sailors who value independence, reliability and sound navigational practice.
Rather than replacing the traditional skills of celestial navigation, Vincenta was created to remove the repetitive mathematical work that often makes the subject appear more complicated than it really is.
Running entirely on the TI-Nspire™ CX graphing calculator, Vincenta provides a dedicated platform for astronomical calculations without relying on Internet access, satellite navigation or the vessel's electrical systems during normal operation.
Modern satellite navigation has transformed offshore navigation, yet prudent seamanship has always encouraged carrying an independent means of determining position.
Traditional celestial navigation remains one of the most robust independent navigation methods ever developed, but the volume of calculations involved can discourage many sailors from learning or using it regularly.
Vincenta was created to bridge that gap by combining the timeless principles of celestial navigation with modern computation, allowing navigators to spend less time performing repetitive calculations and more time understanding their observations.
Vincenta Ltd was founded on a simple principle: marine navigation tools should combine mathematical precision with calm, human-centred clarity at sea. Originally from Italy and now a naturalised British citizen, Vincenta’s founder brings a lifetime of diverse experience across engineering, aviation, healthcare, and astronomy.
With a background in electronic engineering (MSc in Electromagnetism), a Private Pilot Licence, and over 48 years as an amateur astronomer, Vincenta’s founder has spent a lifetime studying celestial mechanics and observing the night sky. In fact, he developed his first celestial software project during secondary school on a 1982 Olivetti M20—a computer his father had purchased for his land surveying business.
When he began sailing aboard his 1979 Nauticat 33 off Walton-on-the-Naze, Essex, he recognized an opportunity to unite these disciplines for the offshore cruising community. Having also served as a community palliative care nursing team lead in London, he brought an empathetic philosophy to software design: at sea, just as in healthcare, information must be delivered with absolute clarity, reducing cognitive stress when conditions become demanding.
Vincenta is the culmination of this journey: a celestial navigation workstation engineered with scientific rigour, tested on the North Sea, and designed with genuine care for the safety and self-reliance of the sailor.
Vincenta was conceived, written, and extensively tested aboard a sea-going sailing yacht on the waters off Walton-on-the-Naze, Essex.
Every screen layout, keypad shortcut, and calculation workflow was evaluated under real maritime conditions—from direct sunlight in the cockpit to night passages at the chart table.
The result is an electronic celestial navigation aid designed by a sailor, for sailors, with a deep respect for the practical realities of navigation at sea.
Every aspect of Vincenta has been designed around one simple principle:
"The navigation remains traditional. Only the calculations become easier."
Vincenta was never intended to automate navigation or replace navigational judgement. Instead, it was designed to automate the mathematics, allowing the navigator to concentrate on taking accurate observations, understanding the results and making informed navigational decisions.
For this reason, Vincenta deliberately avoids features that depend upon permanent Internet connections, cloud services or continuous software updates. The result is a dedicated celestial navigation computer that is ready whenever it is needed, whether alongside a marina berth or thousands of miles offshore.
The name Vincenta was chosen for two reasons.
First, it is inspired by Vincent van Gogh's masterpiece The Starry Night. The night sky has inspired artists, astronomers and navigators for centuries, and The Starry Night captures the enduring fascination of the heavens upon which celestial navigation depends.
Secondly, the name draws upon the traditional meaning associated with Vincent, derived from the Latin vincens, meaning "conquering" or "prevailing". While Vincenta is not intended to replace navigational knowledge or experience, it was created to help navigators confidently master the computational side of celestial navigation.
Together, these ideas reflect both the inspiration of the stars above and the practical purpose of the software.
Vincenta continues to evolve through practical use, careful testing and feedback from sailors, instructors and navigators.
Future development will continue to focus on the same principles upon which Vincenta was founded: dependability, simplicity and respect for the traditional art of celestial navigation.
The goal has never been to change celestial navigation. It is simply to make it more approachable, practical and enjoyable for today's navigator.
